Background

Springlake Coal Mine is a surface and underground coal mine in KwaZulu Natal Province, South Africa.[4]

There have been no public reports about the mine, which was due to exhaust its resources around 2018, in recent years. As such, it is believed to be mothballed.[4] Springlake Colliery is located 360 km southeast of Johannesburg, near Dundee, in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.[4]

The mine, which has a +29-year operating history, was once known as South Africa’s largest producer of anthracite.[4] It was acquired by Petmin in November 2005. It switched ownership several times after this, including Shanduka Coal, and was acquired by Phembani when the two companies merged in December 2015.[5][6][7][8]

The current operating status of the mine is unclear. While it is believed to have been absorbed into Phembani's Middelburg Complex (MBO), Springlake has assumedly exhausted its coal resource (in 2007, its estimated life-of-mine was 11 years); however, there has been no public news about the colliery in recent years.[4]
