The categories of steelmaking processes used in the GEM Global Steel Plant Tracker are defined as follows:
- integrated: plants producing pig iron and crude steel on site, generally through a blast furnace/basic oxygen furnace configuration
- electrical: plants producing crude steel in melt shops, using electric arc furnaces
- oxygen: plants producing crude steel, but no pig iron through a basic oxygen steelmaking process like a basic oxygen furnace
