Background

The Stepnoy coal mine (Разрез Степной) is a surface mine in Khakassia Republic, Russia.[7] The Stepnoy coal mine is operated Razrez Stepnoy Coal Company JSC.[8] Until early 2022 it was a subsidiary of Russian Coal, when it was was sold to Octo Coal.[9][10] The acquisition was partially financed with a bank funding from Uralsib bank.[9] As of September 2022, the coal mine was not listed on Russian Coal website anymore.

Almost all of the coal produced is enriched at the washing plant with capacity of 5.6 million tonnes per year.[9] Produced coal is supplied to the domestic energy companies and is exported to Europe and Asia.[8][10]

In 2021 the coal mine produced 4.1 million tonnes of coal. Rail transhipments to the domestic consumers exceeded 1.1 million tonnes, largest domestic consumers are Novosibirsk-2 power station, Novosibirsk-4 power station, Apatitskaya CHPP power station and Artyomovskaya power station.[9] Export of coal was above 1.8 million tonnes.[9] Another source suggested production was a bit higher at 4.4 Mt in 2021.[5]

In 2022, the company achieved 80 million tonne production milestone ahead of its 30th anniversary in 2023.[11] In early 2022, the company planned to achieve 4.4 Mt production in 2022[12], however the actual volume is likely to be lower as it achieved 1.7Mt in 1H 2022.[6] No 2023 coal production figure was available. In 2024, as per Argus Russian coal report from October 2024, coal mines like Mayrykhsky had to reduce exports by 30-56% in 2024.[13]
