Background

Steppe (Pershotravensk) Coal Mine is a coal mine in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Ukraine.

It is also referred to as Stepnaya or Stepova coal mine. The Steppe or Stepnaya or Stepova coal mine is an underground coal mine. It is operated by DTEK Pavlogradugol, a subsidiary of DTEK Group, which is ultimately owned by Ukrainian billionaire Rinat Akhmetov.[6][7]

In 2020 and 2021, the coal mines of DTEK Pavlodgradugol jointly produced 16 million tonnes of coal.[8][9]

As of 2021, DTEK planned to close the mine in 2024.[10]

Pavlograd is considered the center of Western Donbass and coal mines are located around the city. Located 80km from the Donetsk region, the city periodically suffers from Russian shelling. Due to the Russian invasion, many people left Pavlograd, including mine workers, and about 3,600 miners were mobilized into the Defense Forces. Coal enterprises faced a personnel crisis and now many women are employed in the mines in Pavlograd.[11]

In 2020, DTEK implemented a mine methane cogeneration pilot project, whereby methane gas is converted into electricity and heat. In 2021, the co-generation equipment produced 6 million kWh of electricity from methane in the first year of operations of the new installation, which was 1/10th of the total mine energy consumption.[12]

As of August 2023, the mine appeared to be operational[13] although no production levels are known. The latest production figure is from 2015 at 2 Mt.[14]
