Location
The map below shows the exact location of the Stronghold Panther Creek Plant near Nesquehoning, Pennsylvania, USA.
Background
The mining operation was cited at the Panther Creek waste coal power plant, which was built to burn low-grade coal that was set aside as waste material from older coal mines, mostly during the mid century era.[1] The power plant was purchased by Stronghold Digital Mining -- a company focused on waste coal bitcoin mining -- in November 2021[2]. Stronghold's other property is a similar operation at the Scrubgrass waste coal plant near Kennerdell, Pennsylvania.[3]
Burning waste coal material is controversial. While it achieves remediation of coal waste dumps which pose contamination issues, it also results in higher carbon dioxide emissions and potentially higher levels of other types of emissions.[4]
