Background

The Sumitomo Osaka Cement Ako Cement Plant, located in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, is a significant facility in the company's production network. The plant operates a 102-megawatt (MW) power station, contributing to the region's energy supply.

In November 2021, Sumitomo Osaka Cement secured an agreement with Hyogo Prefecture to accept and process disaster waste from the region. This initiative was aimed to facilitate the rapid reception and processing of materials resulting from natural disasters, such as earthquakes, thereby supporting cleanup efforts and promoting a sustainable society.[1]

The company has set ambitious targets to reduce energy-related CO₂ emissions. By optimizing recycling technologies and introducing advanced energy-saving equipment, Sumitomo Osaka Cement aims to achieve a 30% reduction in energy-related CO₂ emissions from 2005 levels on a carbon intensity basis by 2030.[2]
