Background

In October 2021, Summit Oil and Shipping Co Ltd (Summit) proposed setting up an LNG floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) at Matarbari Deep Sea Port in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. The company would still need approval from Bangladesh's ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources to move forward.[1]

In June 2023, Bangladesh's government approved the proposal to build the terminal.[4] Additionally, in June 2023, the company signed a 15-year terminal user agreement with state-owned energy firm Petrobangla that underpins the project. It is likely that the company will opt for a conversion FSRU due to the global shortage of newbuild FSRUs.[2]

In December 2023, Summit Group obtained the government's final approval to build the terminal.[5]

In January 2024, Summit Group signed a preliminary pact to supply 1.5 mtpa of LNG to state-run Petrobangla for 15 years, starting from October 2026.[5] In June 2024, the supply contract was finalized.[6]
