Background
The plant is also known as Kumargaon Power Plant or Kumargaon Power Station. The plant is operated by Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB).
In 2009, the Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources of Bangladesh planned to upgrade the 150 MW Sylhet Gas turbine power plant to a 225 MW Combined cycle power plant to generate more power using less gas. For this purpose, Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB) signed a deal with Shanghai Electric Group.
The 150 MW Power Plant MW unit came online in 2012. [7]
In November 2017, a deal to upgrade the 150 MW Power Plant to 250 MW was signed.[8]
In September 2019, the project to upgrade the 150 MW gas turbine power plant to a 225 MW combined cycle plant became costlier as it was delayed. At the time, the Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources Ministry had sent the project’s second revision proposal to the Planning Commission seeking Tk 113.43 crore (US $11.9 million) cost hike and one-year time extension, said sources in the ministry.[9]
The project was first approved in early February 2013 to be implemented from January 2013 to December 2014 period at an estimated cost of Tk 707.53 crore (US $74.4 million) with financial assistance from the Islamic Development Bank (IDB).[9]
In November 2020, a fire broke out at the Kumargaon power plant in Sylhet.[10]
In 2020, the upgrade to 225 MW came online.[7]
