Background
The proposed Alexander Mining Project is a greenfields project—that is, a new mine site located in unexplored or currently undeveloped areas. The Alexander coal reserves are required to replace coal currently purchased from the Isibonelo Colliery, when Isibonelo's operations cease.[6]
Although the project proposal includes opencast mining operations, Sasol has indicated that they may decide to mine additional areas of the remaining reserves at Alexander in the future via underground mining.[6]
The project's mine life is estimated to be 13 years.[6]
