Background

In July 2024, TGS (Transportadora de Gas del Sur SA) reconfirmed its interest in developing an LNG export terminal at Puerto Galván, in the city of Bahía Blanca, Buenos Aires province, Argentina.[1][3] The proposed terminal would include up to 4 export trains[1], each with a capacity of 4 MMm3/d (million cubic meters per day), for a total capacity of up to 16 MMm3/d.[3], or between 4.0 and 5.3 mtpa (metric tonnes per annum).[1]

TGS had previously been studying a similar LNG export project in Bahía Blanca as a joint venture with Excelerate Energy.[3][4] However, as of June 2024, Excelerate appeared to be abandoning the Bahía Blanca location in favor of a stake in the new Argentina GNL terminal proposed by YPF and Petronas in Río Negro province.[4] One month earlier, TGS had put its own plans for the Bahía Blanca terminal on standby while it studied the possibility of supporting the YPF-Petronas project instead[5] — but the company's July 2024 announcement made it clear that the Puerto Galván liquefaction project was back on the table.[1]
