Background

In January 2024, reporting announced that the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand was seeking the allocation of a coal block in Uttarakhand which would include a mine mouth coal-fired power station.[3] The proposed power station would have 1,000 MW of capacity and would be the first non-captive coal-fired power station in the state of Uttarakhand.[3] According to reports, a joint venture (THDCIL-UJVNL Energy Limited) had been set up between UJVN Limited and THDC India Limited to develop power projects in Uttarakhand, including the proposed coal-fired power station.[4][5]

News in July 2024 announced that the central government had given "in-principle" approval to THDCIL-UJVNL Energy Company (TUECO) to set up the power station in Uttarakhand.[6]
