Background
In July 2022, the Ministry of Energy of Russia received an order to develop a plan of gas supply for the Zaporozhia Oblast (occupied by Russia) in Ukraine as the same month Ukraine had terminated deliveries of gas to the region. One of the potential scenarios was restoration of the retired Soviet Taganrog-Mariupol-Berdyansk Gas Pipeline, which was passing through the territory of the Donetsk People's Republic. Despite the fact that gas was already running to Berdyansk, the pipeline needed to be reconstructed.[3]
In July 2023, the government of the Donetsk People’s Republic announced the beginning of works to build a gas pipeline from Taganrog to Melitopol.[2]
