Background
The seven existing coal-fired units of Taishan power station, totaling 5,000 MW, were brought online between 2003 and 2011. The complex includes the following:
- Unit 1 - 600 MW - 2003[1]
- Unit 2 - 600 MW - 2004[1]
- Unit 3 - 600 MW - 2006[1]
- Unit 4 - 600 MW - 2006[1]
- Unit 5 - 600 MW - 2006[1]
- Unit 6 - 1000 MW - 2010[2]
- Unit 7 - 1000 MW - 2011[2]
Units 6 and 7 (1,000 MW each, and included in the total above) were completed in 2010-11.[3][4]
Proposed expansion
Shenhua Guohua Power had planned an additional Units 8 & 9 of 1,000 MW each.[5]
With no known developments on the proposed units between 2011 and 2022, the expansion was presumed cancelled.
In addition, due to new restrictions announced during 2016 by the National Energy Administration and the National Development and Reform Commission, further capacity expansions at this location appeared to be on hold or cancelled. (For details, see China's 2016 Restrictions on Development of Coal-Fired Power Capacity.)
However, in October 2022, a Phase III expansion was put up for public review and appeared revived.[6]
Ownership
On August 28, 2017, China's State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC) announced that China Guodian Corporation and Shenhua Group will be jointly restructured. Shenhua Group will become China National Energy Investment Group and will absorb China Guodian Corporation. It will be the largest power company in the world by installed capacity, as well as the world's largest coal producer.[7][8] The merger was completed on November 28, 2017.[9]
