Background

The two existing coal-fired units of Taizhou power station, totaling 2,000 MW, were brought online between 2007 and 2009. The plant was originally owned by China Guodian.[1][2] [3]

Description of Expansion

Guodian is currently building two additional coal-fired units at this plant, Units 3-4, with a total planned capacity of 2,000 MW. The new units are scheduled to be completed in 2015.[3][4]

Unit 3 was completed in September 2015.[5] Unit 4 was completed in 2016.[6]

Ownership

On August 28, 2017, China's State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC) announced that China Guodian Corporation and Shenhua Group will be jointly restructured. Shenhua Group will become China National Energy Investment Group and will absorb China Guodian Corporation. It will be the largest power company in the world by installed capacity, as well as the world's largest coal producer.[7][8] The merger was completed on November 28, 2017.[9]

Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage facility

In June 2023, it was reported that China Energy had commissioned a carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) facility at the Taizhou power station. According to China Energy, the facility was expected to capture 500,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. As of June 2023, it was Asia’s largest CCUS project in the coal-fired power sector, and the third largest in the world.[10][11][12]
