In October 2007, Tangshan Iron and Steel Group of China signed a letter of intent with North Korea’s Foreign Economy Bureau to build a joint-venture steel plant in the Kim Chaek Industrial Park in North Hamgyong Province along the North Korean northeastern coast. The plant is expected to have a capacity of 1500 ttpa steel. The iron ore for the plant is expected to be sourced from nearby mines, and its products would be distributed in the North Korean domestic market.[1] According to a 2014 OECD report, the project is not progressing well.[2]
