Background
In April 2021, it was reported that Kenya and Tanzania signed a deal that could revive plans to export gas to Mombasa from Dar es Salaam via a new pipeline.[1] The agreement is part of a larger plan to expand gas infrastructure links between Kenya and Tanzania.[1][2]
In October 2022, the governments of Tanzania and Kenya announced that they had agreed to fast-track plans for the construction of the pipeline, stating also that the project would eventually connect Kenya's capital city Nairobi, and that it would be a public-private partnership.[4] However, as of September 2023, construction was yet to begin and no specific start date had been set. The acquisition of petroleum refineries in Mombasa by the Government of Kenya is set to pave way for construction of the project whose feasibility studies were also completed[5].
