Background on Mine
The Tara Opencast Coal Mine Project of 6 MTPA on a mining lease area of 1801.31 ha is located in Hasdeo Arand Coalfields in villages, Tara, Kantaroli and Janardanpur, District Sarguja, State Chhattisgarh, India. The mine was first allocated to Chhattisgarh Mineral Development Corporation for 2x660 MW Thermal Power Plant proposed to be located at Premnagar Tehsil, District Sarguja, Chhattsigarh at a distance of about 6km from the mine. The project secured the environment clearance for its development on 23 May 2012.[1]
The coal mine was cancelled by the Supreme Court on 24 September 2014 in the wake of coalgate scandal.[2] Jindal Steel and Power Limited had won the bid for the mine in year 2015 however, the mine was not given to the company citing unfair bid value. The mines remains unallocated for now.[3]
