Background on Mine
The Tasra Coal Mining Project of 4 MTPA of total project area 860.59 ha (ML area 540 ha) is located in villages Tasra, Kandra, Domgarh, Rohrabandh, Het Kandra, Chakchitahi and Chasnalla, in Jharia Coalfields, District Dhanbad, State Jharkhand, India. The project has geological reserves containing up to 250 million tonnes. Steel Authority of India acquired Tasra coal mine from Bharat Coking Coal (BCCL) in 1996. In 2013, Lanco Infratech won the bid to establish a coal washery, and develop, as well as operate, a captive power project Tasra coking Power Project with a capacity of 300MW in a joint venture with SAIL.[1]
The Environemnt Clearance to the project was granted on 13 October 2009. The required Public Hearing was held on 09.09.2007 for 1 MTPA project and on 18.03.2009 for 4 MTPA project. The coal was primarily to be used for SAIL's five Steel Plants. The project involves R&R of 7 villages – Tasra (304), Kandra (2088), Domgarh (2140), Rohrabandh (4124), Het Kandra (1584), Chakchitahi (868) and Chasnalla (2712).[2] The project has been mired in controversy due to land acquisition related problems. Aftre the passage of the Right to Fair Compensation, Transparency in Land Acquisition, Resettlement and Rehabilitation Act 2013, the process of R&R has started afresh. The coal production started in December 2017.[3]
