Background

In March 2024, WaveCrest Energy LLC announced market capacity for a proposed terminal in Teesside, England. The project could deliver up to 248.5 GWh per day of natural gas, which it said is equivalent to around 17% of the country’s natural gas demand. The facility will include onshore storage and regasification equipment and a marine jetty for unloading LNG tankers. The sponsors said that construction would take less than a year, with an anticipated start date in 2026.

According to WaveCrest Energy, "the project is classified as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project and will be seeking a Development Consent Order from the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero."

An existing proposal to recommission Trafigura's Teesside GasPort FSRU project was active as of April 2023.[4] As of the time of WaveCrest's proposal, it was unclear whether its project would be in any way related to Trafigura's facility.
