Background
Natural gas for the Termogas Machala power plant is supplied from the Amistad Gas Field off Ecuador's Pacific coast.[16][17]
A proposed expansion of the power station designed to add between 180 MW and 187 MW[16][18][19] of new combined cycle capacity has been indefinitely suspended since 2017.[16][18][20] The expansion project remained only 58% complete as of March 2022[18], though the Ecuadorian government has continued to seek private investors to finish construction.[21][16][18][22]
According to Nelson Jaramillo Pita, manager of Sycar, a gas importing company, as of April 2024 "the Termogas Machala combined cycle has not been completed because there is no security or guarantee of long-term gas supply."[23] During that same month, the Minister of Energy and Mines, Roberto Luque, visited the Termogas Machala complex and noted that it was operating at 25% of its total capacity, with only one operational gas turbine and poorly-maintained equipment.[23][24]
