Background
In December 2019 it was announced that the terminal will be built by a consortium of Myanmar and Japanese companies in the Thilawa Special Economic Zone. The Myanmar companies involved will be MAPCO, Eden Group, Myanmar Edible Oil Industrial Public Corporation Limited and Myanmar Agriculture and General Development Public Limited. The Japanese companies providing financing will be Marubeni, Sumitomo and Mitsui. Construction was scheduled to begin in March 2020.[2]
In July 2020, Marubeni, Sumitomo and Mitsui received a notice to proceed from the Myanmar government and have teamed up with Myanmar conglomerate Eden Group to build the LNG-to-power project. According to Marubeni, it will carry out a detailed feasibility study followed by financing and construction of the LNG terminal, gas power plant and associated facilities. Myanmar expects to see first electricity from the project in 2026.[1]
There have been no project updates in over four years, and the project is presumed to be cancelled as of July 2024.
