Background
Tianjin LNG Terminal (Sinopec) is an LNG terminal under development in Tianjin, China.[4]
Tianjin LNG Terminal (Sinopec) started construction in 2013 and was originally set to be running by 2016. In July 2015, it was announced by China’s National Audit Office that the project was delayed until 2017. The terminal will supply LNG to Beijing, Tianjin, and the Hebei region.[5] The 3 mtpa facility is awaiting final regulatory approvals for completion.[6]
The terminal began commercial operations in February 2018, and completed construction of all of its storage tanks in September 2018.[7]
The receiving capacity increased from 3 mtpa to 6 mtpa in 2021 following the completion of the second receiving berth[3].
Expansion projects
Phase II
In September 2018 Sinopec announced that Phase II of the project had been approved by the Tianjin Development and Reform Commission. Phase II would construct five LNG storage tanks, each with a capacity of 220,000 cubic meters.[8] Construction of the expansion began in April 2020.[9][10] Operations are set to start in October 2023.[11]
The main structure completed construction in August 2022.[12]
In September 2023, phase two with 5 storage tanks has completed construction and is preparing for the full operation when the winter heating season arrives. [13]

Phase III
In December 2021, Phase III (Stage one and two ) of the LNG terminal was approved by Tianjin government. It was considered a necessary step toward the final permit by NDRC.[17] According to the approval document, Phase III (Stage one and two ) plans to add 5 more storage tanks with 270,000 cubic meters each to the LNG terminal, as well as light hydrocarbon separation devices, cold and heat exchange stations, uploading stations and supporting auxiliary facilities. The total receiving capacity of Tianjin LNG terminal will be increased to 11.65 million tons per year after the Phase III is completed.[17]
By the end of 2022, no further news could be heard on Phase III.
The local authority said in December 2023 that the construction of the foundation of the third phase had completed. It is next to the first and second phase on the left side.[18]
