Timken Faircrest steel plant is an electric arc furnace (EAF) steel plant operating in Canton, Ohio, United States.
Location
The map below shows the exact location of the plant in Canton, Ohio, United States:
- Location: 4511 Faircrest St. SW, Canton, Ohio 44706, United States
- Coordinates (WGS 84): 40.755388, -81.439369 (exact)
Background
The Timken Faircrest steel plant began operating in 1917. In 1985, Timken Steel bought the plant for $500 million.[1]
In 2012, Timken invested $225 million in expanding the Faircrest steel plant, increasing capacity by 25%.[2]
Environmental Compliance & Worker Safety
In 2014, the Occupational Safety and Hazard Association (OSHA) fined TimkenSteel $77,000 after inspections of three of its Ohio plants (including Faircrest) revealed serious violations.[3]
In 2015, two TimkenSteel plants in Ohio, including the Faircrest plant were documented as having violated EPA rules. The Faircrest Plant was listed as releasing twice as much mercury as permitted.[4] It is unclear if TimkenSteel was fined or if any penalty was applied for these violations.
In 2016, a fire technician at the facility died after being exposed to nitrogen gas; OSHA fined TimkenSteel again for violating standards.[5]
In May 2022, U.S. Steel agreed to pay a $1.5 million fine for operating the Edgar Thomson plant without functional air pollution controls.[6]
