Tomskaya mine (шахта Томская) is an underground coal mine in Kemerovo Oblast, Russia.
Location
The map below shows the mine, near Mezhdurechensk, in Mezhdurechensky District, Kemerovo Oblast, Russia.[1]
Background
Tomskaya Mine opened in 1963, and came under the ownership of Yuzhkuzbasugol in 2002.
Endogenous fires which broke out in 1996, 2000 and 2003 prevented the development of the mine. As a result of the last fire in 2006 (with one fatality), it was decided to flood the mine above the 140 m mark in order to prevent self-heating of coal in the worked-out part of the longwall face, the isolation of which was not completed due to the accident.[2] A few months before the accident, Yuzhkuzbassugol acquired a new area - the Tomskaya-Glubokaya mine field - with reserves of 205 million tonnes of coking coal of the K and KC grades and energy OS and T grades. The company paid 630 million rubles for it, but it never started to develop it.[2]
In 2009, the mine was flooded and mothballed.[2][3] It appears that mine safety was the main reason.[4]
An underground fire was recorded at the mine in August 2022.[5]
