Background on Mine
The proposed 6 million ton-per-annum Tubed coal mine is a proposal of Tubed Coal Mines Limited, a 60-40 consortium consisting of Hindalco Industries (a subsidiary of Aditya Birla Group) and Tata Power (a subsidiary of Tata Group). The mine would thus be one of very few private coal mines in India. The mine's coal would be used to power Hindalco's Jharkhand Aluminium power station and Tata's Tiruldih Power Project. The coal block was allocated in August 2007, and the geological reserve was purchased in October 2007. Some permits have been issued, but others may still be outstanding.[5][6]
It is unclear whether this proposal is still active, though a site inspection was conducted on August 13, 2019.[7]
