Background of Project
A project to build a 300 MW (2x150) power station in the Tufanbeyli district of Adana that would exploit the local Tufanbeyli coalfield was first devised by Ciner Group in 2004. Although the Ciner Group received a positive EIA for the project, the permits for both the mine and plant was acquired by Enerjisa, a partnership between the Turkish conglomerate Sabancı Holding and the German firm EON, in 2006. Enerjisa revised Ciner Group's plans to build a larger, 450 MW (3x150) power plant. In 2007, the reserves of the then-proposed mine were announced as 154 million tons proven and 25 million tons probable.[2]
In 2016 most of EON's fossil fuel assets were split off into the new company of Uniper, however Enerjisa remained with EON.[3]
In 2018 20% of Enerjisa Enerji was listed on the Istanbul stock market.[3][4]
As of September 2020, there were two coalmines in Tufanbeyli owned by Enerjisa and supplied the Tufanbeyli power station. [5]These mines are operated by Fernas İnşaat A.Ş. (Fernas Construction Co.) which singed a contract with Enerjisa for 12 years although the contract's start year is not specified on the company website. According to the company website, Fernas extracts 5.5 million tons a year.[6] Observers from the Chamber of Mine Engineers noted that in September 2020, lignite production stood at 6 million tons per year and that the mine had 250 million tons in reserves.[5]
In June 2021, Enerjisa announced that they were planning to increase the production at their Tufanbeyli mine from 5.5 million tons per year to 8 million tons.[7]
Opposition
In January 2015, local residents protested against the use of foreign workers at the construction site, arguing that project developers should be using local labor.[8]
