Background

Ugolnaya Coal Mine (Шахта Угольная) is an underground coal mine in Anadyrsky, Chukotka Region, Russia. Shakhta Ugolnaya JSC owns and operates the coal mine, it was created in 2000. The company is owned by the regional government (51%), the rest belongs to the management and city administration representatives.[3] In 2022 Chukotenergo was in the process of selling its 10% stake.[3]

The coal mine develops the Anadyr lignite coal field in Chukotka, in very harsh climate conditions.[4]

The mine supplies coal to consumers in the autonomous region.[4]

Production levels have decreased in the recent years as the main consumer Anadyrskaya power station - has partially switched from coal to gas.[5] The mine also supplies coal to Egvekinotskaya power station. [3]

In January-August 2023, the mine produced 106 thousand tonnes of coal.[6]
