Background

Baikunth cement works was established in 1974 by Century Cement, a a division of Century Textiles and Industries Ltd, a flagship company of BK Birla Group.[1][2] The plant was set up with the initial capacity of 0.6 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of Portland cement, currently, the plant produces 100-per cent blended cement with a total capacity of 2.1 mtpa.[2] The plant operates two clinker production lines of capacity 2530 tonnes per day each. The 1st Kiln of the plant was lighted up in December 1974 and 2nd Kiln in May 1975.[1] In 2018, Century Cement proposed the expansion of the clinker production capacity of the plant from 1.67 mtpa to 2 mtpa by upgrading the two kilns and the cement production from 2.4 mtpa to 3 mtpa.[1]

In 2018, Century Textiles and Industries Ltd. decided to demerge its cement business to UltraTech Cement Ltd. of the Aditya Birla Group in a stock (share) swap deal.[3] UltraTech Cement is the largest manufacturer of grey cement and ready-mix concrete (RMC) and one of the largest manufacturers of white cement in India.[4] UltraTech Cement operates a cement production capacity 2.4 mtpa at the plant.[5]
