From Global Energy Monitor

Background

In October 2020, Unitex Group announced their plans to invest about BDT 650 crore to set up manufacturing plants for chemicals, steel and paint at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar (BSMSN) in Chattogram. The company submitted its investment proposal to the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA), seeking a 20-acre plot at the BSMSN. The plan is expected to be implemented in phases with the steel and chemical manufacturing plants to be constructed first while the paint factory will be established later.[1]

The Unitex Steel Mills Limited will have a scrap-based electric arc furnace with a production capacity of 1000 thousand metric tonnes per annum (ttpa). According to the draft environmental impact assessment report published in November 2023, the project start date would be 01 November 2023, with a tentative preparation duration of 15-16 months and implementation duration of 2 years.[2]
