University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Plant

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse has a plant that uses over 7,000 tons of coal a year. In 2008 the plant emitted 49,933 pounds of carbon monoxide, 193,346 pounds of sulfur dioxide, and 13,072 pounds of particle pollution or dust.[1]
In September 2009 La Crosse students protested the plant, calling for the University to move away from coal. The Sierra Club contends that the La Crosse plant, along with the University of Wisconsin's Eau Claire, Stevens Point, and Stout coal-burning plants all are in violation of the EPA’s Clean Air Act because they didn't install modern pollution controls when making plant renovations.[1]
