Background
The Novo Tempo Barcarena power station is part of a larger gas-to-power project that also includes the Celba FSRU (Floating Storage and Regasification Unit), a berthing pier, and a gas pipeline.[7] In November 2019, Pará's governor, Helder Bardbalho, identified Novo Tempo Barcarena as a priority project because the power station serves the "public interest".[7] The power station and its supporting infrastructure was projected to create 7,500 jobs and receive R$2 billion (two billion Brazilian reais) worth of investment.[7]
By February 2021, the Novo Tempo Barcarena plant had received all of its environmental licenses and was authorized to start construction, with energy commercialization slated for July 2025.[8][9] The project was listed as a participant in Brazil's A-5 national energy auction in September 2021.[10] As of mid-2022 the power plant was reportedly under construction and scheduled for completion by 2025.[11][12]
In May 2023, New Fortress Energy confirmed that the power plant was under construction and remained on track to begin commercial operations in July 2025.[13]
Ownership
The Barcarena gas-to-power project is being developed by CELBA (Centrais Elétricas Barcarena S.A.). Several companies have held a stake in the project over the years, including Hygo Energy Transition, Golar LNG, Stonepeak Partners LP, Evolution Power Partners and Oak Participações.[14][15][16] Following a series of mergers and acquisitions in 2021, New Fortress Energy was expected to assume 100% ownership of CELBA.[17][18][19]
