Background

The Gasoducto de los Valles Calchaquíes was proposed in 2023 as a means of supplying fossil gas from Argentina's Vaca Muerta region to customers in the northern Argentine provinces of Salta and Tucumán.[1] The pipeline's development is contingent on completion of the Reversión del Gasoducto Norte project, designed to reverse the direction of flow along the Gasoducto Norte from southward to northward, thereby northern Argentina to replace imports of Bolivian gas with domestically produced supplies.[1] The pipeline would start at the Candelaria compressor station along the Gasoducto Norte and extend westward through the municipalities of San Pedro de Colalao in Tucumán province, and El Tala, El Jardín, Tolombón, Cafayate and Animaná in Salta province to reach its end point at San Carlos (Salta province).[1][2]

In August 2023 the governor of Salta province, Gustavo Sáenz, launched a government tender for rights to construct the new pipeline.[3][4] Three companies' bids were pre-approved in October 2023[5], and in November 2023 the government awarded a contract to UT Hugo Carmen Ojeda S.A. - Semisa Infraestructura S.A.[6] It was unclear when construction of the pipeline project would begin.
