Dr. Narla Tata Rao Thermal power station is an operating power station of at least 2560-megawatts (MW) in Ibrahimpatnam, Krishna, Andhra Pradesh, India. It is also known as Vijayawada Thermal Power Station.

Background
The 1,760 MW plant is operated by Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (APGENCO). The plant originally consisted of 7 units, commissioned as follows:[2]
- Unit 1 - 210 MW - 1979
- Unit 2 - 210 MW - 1980
- Unit 3 - 210 MW - 1989
- Unit 4 - 210 MW - 1990
- Unit 5 - 210 MW - 1994
- Unit 6 - 210 MW - 1995
- Unit 7 - 500 MW - 2009
Protests close plant
In October 2013 parts of Andhra Pradesh were blacked out after employees of the Vijaywada Thermal Power Station, who were protesting the division of the state, shut six out of the seven units at the plant.[3]
800 MW expansion (Unit 8)
According to a January 2012 report posted on the website Industry Monitor, the Andhra Pradesh government has decided to make use of vacant space at three existing power plants in order to build an additional 2,400 MW of capacity. The three plants are Vijayawada station, the Krishnapatnam power station, and the Kothagudem Thermal Power Station. At the Vijayawada station, the government proposes an 800 MW expansion on 50 acres of wasteland adjacent to the current site.[4]
The expansion was permitted in 2015, and construction was planned to begin in July 2015. APGENCO said the new plant will be built in four years at a cost of Rs 5,200 crore.[5] As of May 2016 there are no news that construction has begun. In July 2016 the Hindu reported that construction would begin soon.[6] The engineering, construction, and procurement contract was awarded to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), which is an Indian government-owned engineering and manufacturing enterprise based in New Delhi, India.[7]
The March 2017 Broad Status states engineering work on the unit was under way.[8] Boiler erection started on May 22, 2017.[9]
According to The Hindu in 2018, construction was being expedited.[10]
As of May 2022, the unit was expected in 2022.[11] As of November 2022, the unit was delayed and expected by April 2023.[12]
In May 2023, the unit's construction was reportedly 86% complete, and was expected to be commissioned in July 2023.[13] The June 2023 Broad Status report provided an updated expected COD of October 2023, with trials expected to run in September 2023.[14]
The Central Electricity Authority's December 2023 Installed Capacity report noted that Unit 8 had been commissioned on December 20, 2023.[15] According to reporting, the power station's new capacity total of 6,610 MW could meet more than 50% of the state's total power demand.[16][17] The December 2023 Broad Status report confirmed that Unit 8 had begun commercial operation on December 20, 2023.[18]
Opposition to expansion
According to media reports, residents of Guntupalli, Kethanakonda, Kotikalapudi and other villages near the plant site have resolved to oppose the project. Residents charge that the existing plant has damaged more than 5,000 acres of crops. Residents were preparing to air their grievances at a January 2014 public hearing residents.[19][20]
