Background

Vindhyachal power station is India’s largest coal-fired power plant.[1] Vindhyachal supplies power to several states, including Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Goa, as well as the union territory Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.[2]

The station comprises 13 units, built in five stages between 1997 and 2015.[3][4][5]

Stage I

  • Unit 1 - 210 MW - 1987
  • Unit 2 - 210 MW - 1988
  • Unit 3 - 210 MW - 1989
  • Unit 4 - 210 MW - 1989
  • Unit 5 - 210 MW - 1990
  • Unit 6 - 210 MW - 1991

Stage II

  • Unit 7 - 500 MW - 1999
  • Unit 8 - 500 MW - 2000

Stage III

  • Unit 9 - 500 MW - 2006
  • Unit 10 - 500 MW - 2007

Stage IV[6]

  • Unit 11 - 500 MW - 2012
  • Unit 12 - 500 MW - 2013

Stage V

  • Unit 13 - 500 MW[7] - had a planned start date of 2016,[8] and was commissioned in August 2015.[5]

Carbon capture and methanol pilot project

In 2022, Vindhyachal began a pilot project where carbon dioxide from Unit 13 flue gas is captured and converted into methanol.[2]

Pollution

Vindhyachal power station is one of the world’s top ten most polluting power plants. In 2022, Vindhyachal released approximately 25 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. According to reporting from October 2024, pollution from Vindhyachal and nearby coal mines have heavily affected residents of the Singrauli region.[1]
