Background

The project was developed by local entrepreneur Adam Weitsman, who owns and operates Upstate Shredding, the largest privately held steel recycling company on the east coast.[1] Upstate Shredding owns a steel yard next to a former manufacturing building 3 miles north of Owego, which Weitsman bought and repurposed into a mining operation designed for multiple digital currencies. The building is equipped for 10 MW of mining capacity.[2] Mr. Weitsman has suggested that mining capacity could increase substantially in the future, from his initial plans for a $25 million investment to $100 million.[3] Weitsman's company, Viridium, was created for his new cryptocurrency mining business.
