Background
The Walton coal project is a proposed open cut metallurgical coal mine in the Bowen Basin coalfield of Queensland, Australia.
As of May 2022, the project has withdrawn from the permitting process and appears to be shelved,[2] but Magnetic South could buy the project and join it with their neighboring Gemini Mine.[3][4] The Walton Coal Project is a greenfield project involving the construction and operation of a relatively small scale open cut coal mine. Walton Coal Pty Ltd intends to apply for Mining Leases (MLs) and an Environmental Authority (EA), and are currently in the process of preparing and environmental impact statement.[5]
The project is 100% owned by Walton Coal Pty Ltd (WC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Aquila Resources Pty Ltd (Aquila). Aquila is a privately owned exploration and mining company. Aquila holds multiple coal tenures in Queensland.[5]
The coal product will be high quality, low ash, low volatile Pulverised Coal Injection (PCI) (LVPCI). The project is expected to produce approximately 15.6 Mt of ROM coal over its production life of eight years.[5]
In addition to the coal mine, the project is looking to build a coal handling and preparation plant, conveyor systems, and a rail spur and loop so that the coal can be transported to Gladstone for export via the RG Tanna Coal Terminal or alternatively Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal.[6]
As of June 2020, its owner, Walton Coal Pty Ltd, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Aquila Resources, was in the process of preparing an environmental impact statement.[6]
According to the Queensland government, the EIS was withdrawn a week before its May 9, 2022 deadline. The project appears to be shelved.[2]
