Western Arctic Coal Project

The Western Arctic Coal Project is coal exploration project being undertaken by BHP Billiton. In July 2006 BHP Billiton signed a memorandum of understanding with the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation (ASRC) "to conduct a five-year coal exploration program and concept-level project evaluation on corporation lands in northwestern Alaska." The project area is to the south of Point Lay.[1]
However, it appears that the project is no longer under active consideration. On its website BHP Billiton lists the last public presentation on the project as being from Jan 2008 and the last community newsletter from November that year.[1] The company's 2009 annual report does not list the project as one of its "development projects".[2]
