Background
The Winchester South coal project is a proposed coal project in Queensland, Australia.[6] Whitehaven Coal owns in the project. Prior to Whitehaven, Rio Tinto had a 75% interest in Winchester South coal project, with Spectre Group holding a 25% interest.[6].[7] They sold the project to Whitehaven in 2018.
As of June 2020, Whitehaven has lodged an application for a 15 mtpa open cut mine, and are preparing the draft environmental impact statement. They have many steps to go before the project is approved. The company is hoping to bring the mine into production by 2023.[8]
In 2022, the IEA downsized the apparent size of the project to 8.5 million tonnes per annum[9]
