Background
In November 2024, a representative from the Wonderful Group of Companies Ltd met with Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema to discuss building a new 600 MW captive coal-fired power plant.[2][3] During the meeting, shared on the President’s social media, the Wonderful Group said the company had applied for permits to build the power station in the Southern Province.
The Wonderful Group, a Chinese-owned company that manufactures ceramic tiles and fertilizer, claimed that Zambia’s power crisis stemming from a record drought had reduced the company’s production by up to 40%.[2][4]
