Background
In November 2011, Yıldırım Enerji (a subsidiary of Yıldırım Group) applied to the EPDK to build a 200-MW coal-fired power plant in Elazığ province.[1] Yıldırım filed a second (perhaps modified) application for the same plant to the EPDK in September 2012.[2] An environmental hearing in Yarımca in February 2012 turned violent, as a fistfight broke out between supporters and opponents of the plant; several people were hospitalized.[3] Opposition to the plant has been ongoing.[4]
Although Platts had listed this project as cancelled,[5] in May 2014 Yıldırım publicly reiterated its commitment to the project, and stated that the company planned to have permits in hand and begin work in September. Yıldırım apparently plans to use part of the plant's power to fuel a chromium plant, and to sell the rest.[6] In February 2015 the company said it was applying for permits.[7]
As of June 2018 the project remains on the Yıldırım Group website yet only the 2012 rejected application is on the EMRA prelicense list, leaving the status of the project uncertain. As of June 2019 there had been no further news about this project and it appears to be shelved.[8] As of December 2019 there has been no progress on the project in more than four years and it appears to be cancelled.
