Background

In June 2018, it was reported that Yenidere Termik Enerji plans to build a 250 MW lignite plant at Yenidere village, Kale district, Denizli. The project would comprise two 100 MW units and two 25 MW units.[1] In August 2018 the project received a positive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) from the government.[2] The plant received a positive environmental impact assessment (EIA) in March 2020.[3]

Before late 2022, local opposition to the power station was seen to be successful, and many considered the project to be cancelled. However, news about a proposed mine expansion in the region called the status of the project into question. The planned annual addition of 2 million tons of coal extraction capacity was slated to be shipped to Yatağan power station, but it was suspected that the ultimate goal was to supply a power station in Yenidere village.[4]

In March 2023, local opposition to the proposed Yenidere power station was ongoing. Several local officials advocated for the official cancellation of the project, including one official stating (Google translate): "We will definitely not allow the thermal power plant. The region cannot afford this."[5]

As of March 2024, with no update regarding the development of the power station in several years, Yenidere power station was presumed to be shelved.
