Background

The Yesaulskaya coal mine (Есаульская шахта) is an underground coal mine in Kemerovo Oblast, Russia. The Yesaulskaya coal mine is an underground coal mine, operated by Raspadskaya Coal Company, a subsidiary of Evraz. Evraz announced in December 2021 that it is planning to spin off Raspadskaya Coal Company, but these plans were cancelled in March 2022 due to the sanctions against Russia.[10]

According to IEA 2009 report "Coal Mine Methane in Russia" the mine is considered 'super hazardous'.[11]In 2005 an explosion in the mine killed 21 people.[12] The total number of fatalities at the mine between 1997 and 2007 was 25.

An investment project was ongoing at the mine for several years to develop seam 29 with balance reserves of more than 10 Mt. and in 2020, mining of the first longwall with reserves of 3.5 Mt began. This was the biggest longwall in the history of the mine.[13] The reserves were estimated to last until 2025.[14]

Produced coal is processed at the Kuznetskaya and Abashevskaya washing plants. The concentrate in pure form or as part of mixes is either supplied to the domestic market or exported.[13]
