Background
The Yunyaginsky Coal Mine (Разрез Юньягинский) is a surface coal mine in the Komi Republic, Russia.
It is owned and operated by Vorkutaugol.
Vorkutaugol used to be owned by Severstal, but the company was sold in the end of 2021 to Russkaya Energiya, whose majority shareholder is Roman Trotsenko.[5] However Severstal was to remain the key consumer of Vorkutaugol coking coal - the terms of the sale agreement with include a long-term offtake contract guaranteeing Severstal's supply of raw material.[6]
The mine's capacity was reported to be 0.5 million tonnes per year, as per corporate website accessed in 2022.[7] As of 2025, the mine's capacity was stated at 0.3 million tonnes.[8]
Vorkutaugol
Vorkutaugol is one of the largest coal mining companies in Russia. As of 2021, it accounted for about 11% of Russia's coking coal production. Vorkutaugol operates in the Pechora coal basin. The company consists of four underground mines, one open pit mine and several auxiliary enterprises. Vorkutaugol delivered 8.8 million tonnes of production in 2021.[6] In 2022 Vorkutaugol increased coal production to 9.7 million tonnes.[9]
2023 coal production of Vorkutaugol declined by 26% and was 7.2 million tonnes.[10] 1H 2024 production was up by 10% reaching 4.2 million tonnes.[11]
