Background

Environment and social impacts

On January 18th, 1988, the second transport station, Lianjiang Station of the Zhanjiang–Maoming Oil Pipeline, was broken. The erupted oil sprayed on the nearby vehicles and caused a fire. The area on fire was 12,242 square meters. The leaked oil contaminated around 11,500 square meters of farmlands.

On January 13th, 2013, the Zhanjiang–Maoming Oil Pipeline was broken in Chikan District, Zhanjiang City. The oil leaked into the Nanxi River(南溪河), and around 1000 meters were contaminated with oil pollution. The leaking point at Nanxi river was at the upper stream of Chikan Reservoir(赤坎水库), a drinking source for the residents.
