Background
This project was originally planned as the third phase of the Nanhai Foshan power station. But due to local protest for its pollution, it was moved to a new location in Zhanjiang.[1][2] The power station would be sponsored by Guangdong KingSun Power.[3]
The power station received environmental clearance in April 2015.[4] Construction began in September 2015. Operation is planned for 2018.[5]
In January 2017, China's National Energy Board directed the Guangdong Province to suspend or postpone nine coal projects in the province, including Zhanjiang Donghai, due to excess coal capacity. Construction is therefore halted until further notice.[6] For details, see China's 2016 Restrictions on Development of Coal-Fired Power Capacity.
The plant's first two units were listed as a planned construction project for 2020 by Guangdong province.[7]
Construction on Unit 1 or the full power plant began in June 2021.[8] Construction on Unit 2 may have started in April 2022.
In February 2023, a 2 x 1,000 MW Phase II was approved to be developed at the power station.[9][10]
