Background
Zonnebloem Coal Mine (also known as Vulna Colliery) is an opencast mine owned by Glencore and located near Middelburg in Mpumalanga, South Africa. The Zonnebloem mine is situated 2 kilometers east of Middelburg and northeast of Pan Siding on the mainline to Maputo, on the Farm Patattafontein 412JS.[3]
While its former owners included NuCoal (in 2007) and Coal of Africa Limited (CoAL), the mine is now owned by Glencore.[3][4] An exclusive off-take agreement for all run-of-mine coal from Zonnebloem exists and includes the transport of coal some 40 km to the Woestalleen coal processing plant, where it is beneficiated for export and domestic thermal coal markets.[5] Both opencast dragline and truck-and-shovel mining extraction methods are used.[4]
The Zonnebloem mining right expires on 28 March 2039. Coal Reserves are sufficient to support a mine life of 10 and 19 years for Phase 1 and Phase 2, respectively.[4]
