Background
In a 2022 report, Oil Change International, in an analysis using data from Rystad Energy’s UCube, highlighted the "major expansion" of the Zuluf field as partially driving Saudi Arabia to be the "second-largest expansion of new oil and gas production in 2022." The report went on to state "from the Zuluf field expansion alone, Saudi Aramco is by far the single worst company in terms of total new oil and gas supply and associated carbon emissions approved for development in 2022."[1]
In early 2024, Saudi Aramco dialed "down plans for capacity expansion, throwing some ambitious projects into disarray" according to Energy Voice.[8] However, the outlet reported that project which had already reached FID, including Marjan Expansion Oil Field (Saudi Arabia), Berri Expansion Oil Field (Saudi Arabia) and Zuluf, "would continue as planned."
