Background

Founded in 1964, Aceros Arequipa is Peru's largest steel maker. The company began producing finished steel products for the Peruvian market in 1966 with the opening of its new rolling mill in the city of Arequipa.[1] A second lamination facility was launched in Pisco in 1983, and the company began producing its own crude steel in 1987 following a merger with Laminadora del Pacífico.[1] In 1996, DRI operations were added at the Pisco plant, and a year later the company incorporated itself as Aceros Arequipa S.A. following the acquisition of another competitor, Aceros Calibrados S.A.[1] In 2015, Aceros Arequipa consolidated its position as Peru's market leader with the opening of a second rolling mill at Pisco.[1] A year later, the company shut down its original plant in Arequipa, signaling its intention to concentrate future operations at the Pisco location.[2]

2021 capacity expansion and transition from EAF 1 to EAF 2

In July 2021, Aceros Arequipa Pisco raised its nominal steel production capacity from 850 ttpa (thousand tonnes per annum) to 2.1 million tpa with the inauguration of a new SMS electric arc furnace.[1][3]

In February 2022, the plant's older Danieli EAF was deactivated and placed on standby pending an increase in domestic or international steel demand.[4][5][6] Aceros Arequipa's annual reports confirmed that melt shop #2 was responsible for all subsequent steel making at the plant in 2022 and 2023.[5][6]

As of December 2024, EAF 1 remained idle. While Aceros Arequipa has announced its intention to eventually make improvements to EAF 1 and achieve the plant's full production capacity of 2100 ttpa, recent company reports have offered no timeline or other specific details regarding the reactivation of the older furnace.[6]
