Azovstal Iron & Steel Works (Металургійній Комбінат "Азовсталь" (Ukranian)), also known as Azovstal Iron and Steel Works PJSC, is a blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) retired steel plant in Mariupol, Donetsk, Ukraine.

Background

Azovstal Iron & Steel Works is the only rail manufacturer in Ukraine.[1] Azovstal Iron & Steel Works receives iron ore agglomerate from Ilyich Iron & Steel Works.[1]

In February 2022 Metinvest announced its plans for the reconstruction of the dedusting systems in the basic oxygen furnace shop. The new dedusting systems were expected to be commissioned in phases during 2022–2023.[2]

The Azovstal Iron & Steel Works shut down in mid-March 2022 as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.[3] Ukrainian civilians have been using the Azovstal Iron & Steel Works as a hiding place and point of defense since early March 2022 as Russian troops attempt to capture the city of Mariupol.[4]

In January 2023, the director of the federal autonomous institution "Roskapstroy", subordinate to the Ministry of Construction of the Russian Federation, Yulia Maksimova, stated that the Azovstal plant would not be restored.[5]
