Background

The BMM Ispat steel plant began operating in 2006 as one of BMM's many manufacturing plants.[1] The plant had a DRI plant and Induction Furnaces when it began operating. In 2010, the expansion of the plant from 960 ttpa to 2100 ttpa was started through the addition of blast furnace, DRI units, electric arc furnace and related facilities. Additional DRI plant and a steel making capacity of 1100 ttpa were added in 2011.[2]

In 2018, BMM Ispat officially announced it would be expanding the plant by 1100 ttpa and its power plant by 20 MW, with an anticipated start date of 2023.[3][4] According to the website Market Research, the expansion project cost around US$2,667 million and had been in the works since 2012; reportedly, construction had already commenced in 2017.[5] In FY21, JSW Projects Limited acquired 58.47% stake in BMM Ispat Limited.[6]

Post acquisition by Sajjan Jindal Group, the company undertook capex to the tune of ₹1,200 crores in the last two years for setting up blast furnace (BF) of 0.88 MnTPA capacity. The company transitioned from being a semi-integrated steel producer to a fully integrated steel producer, with the lighting up of the blast furnace (BF) operations in the last week of July 2024. With the operationalization of the BF operations, other allied manufacturing activities such as steel melting shop (SMS), oxygen plant and the merchant bar mill are also now in ready to operate condition. According to the management, the entire facility will be completely operational by the end of September 2024.[7]
